But I’m not complaining; its fantastic.
I am all for gay rights, I love my gays dearly and think that they should be protected from bullying.
However, most of this anti-bullying propaganda out there focuses on bullying against the gay community. ALL BULLYING NEEDS TO BE STOPPED. Yes, most of the recent suicides were gay kids who were being harassed and ridiculed for their sexuality, but there are a lot of straight kids out there being pushed around too.
I was bullied to no end when I was in school, and even though I’m OK now, it was hard on me. And it still affects me in ways that I don’t always notice - how I handle conflicts and social issues. Don’t get me wrong - I’m stronger and confident in who I am now, and the bullying has given me more compassion and empathy for outcasts than most people have. But it was still damaging to me at the time. However, nobody did anything about it - the principal told me, “I can’t do anything, it’s your words against theirs.” And on the rare occasion someone DID get in trouble, that person’s 50 friends would harass me for the rest of the day for getting So-and-so “in trouble.”
There wasn’t a lot of bullying awareness back when I was in school - there’d occasionally be a special on Oprah (or any talk show) about it, but it wasn’t a widespread cause. I can’t change my past (and I’m not sure I’d want to, because it’s in the past) but I hope that all this bully awareness will cause drastic change and help future students. (And adults, too. Child bullies don’t grow up to be normal adults, they grow up to be adult bullies.)
Long blog short - ALL BULLYING SHOULD BE STOPPED. It doesn’t matter if the victim is gay, straight, bi, transgendered, white, black, Asian, purple, Ewok…. NO ONE DESERVES TO BE BULLIED.
End the silence. Bullying is fatal.
